Aquarium & Education Internship Overview

A Maritime Gloucester internship is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to gain real-world experience and valuable professional development while exploring a career in education, public marine education and/or aquatic animal husbandry. Interns are an important part of the Maritime Gloucester team and are involved in all aspects of the successful operation of their department. With 16 years of internship programming behind us, Maritime Gloucester has customizable programs that can accommodate various career/coursework interests and provide real-world experience for both public interaction and behind the scenes operations.  Open seven days a week, we strive to accommodate the scheduling needs of individual interns. Our Internship Program application process is competitive. These positions are unpaid.

Time Commitment: 2-3 days/week (10 am-5pm) for at least 8 weeks. Internships available May - October.

Age: Aquarium interns should have completed at least one year of college in a related field. Education interns should have an interest in exploring a career in education. College students will be given priority but highschool applicants welcome to apply.

Application Deadline: Applications should be completed prior to March 15th to be considered for our first round of interviews. Applications received by March 15th will be scheduled for an interview and notified if they are accepted into our program by March 22. Any applications received after March 15th will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all internship slots are filled.

College Aquarium Intern: 

Our aquarium is home to local species that are brought to us by different branches of our community. Aquarium Interns will gain skills in aquarium equipment and tank maintenance as well as animal husbandry. Aquarium Interns engage with the public, assist visitors with proper animal interactions at our touch tank and assist staff with educational programs.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Daily care of the Sea Pocket Aquarium’s appearance

  • Taking and recording water quality

  • Collecting animals from Maritime Gloucester’s docks

  • Cleaning filters

  • Collecting and recording marine debris from our marine debris skimmer (Skimmy) and Maritime Gloucester’s docks

  • Guiding visitors through the Sea Pocket Aquarium

  • Guiding visitors in proper touch tank animal interactions

  • Food preparation and feeding

  • Siphoning debris from tanks


Desired qualities: 

  • A passion for learning, self-responsibility, ability to take initiative and a desire to grow professionally.

  • Biology, marine biology, environmental science or animal science experience preferred.

  • This position requires physical labor. Applicant must be able to lift 40 pounds and must be comfortable on a 6 ft step ladder.

  • Applicant must be able to take in and carry out multiple instructions in a timely fashion.

  • Must be 18 years or older

Education Intern: 

Maritime Gloucester’s historic and active working waterfront site is an amazing resource for community and visitors.  Education Interns will gain skills in informal education programs and public interpretation by assisting staff with hands on interpretive design, curriculum development and teaching techniques.


Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Learning existing curriculum and offerings with the goal to take the lead independently during group or drop-in programs.

  • Team up with staff developing new curriculum offerings for both school and public programs.

  • Assist staff developing hands on interpretation for public engagement throughout the site.


Desired qualities: 

  • Must be professional, well organized, and safety conscious 

  • Enthusiasm and dedication to learning

  • Desire to teach children and adults in an outdoor setting. Prior field experience is a plus.

  • Education, environmental education, biology, environmental studies, ecology or a related field preferred

  • Desire to take on leadership roles and responsibilities

  • Computer, technical and social media skills a plus
